Tasting notes
The 2015 Vernaccia di San Gimignano Riserva Vigna a Solatìo opens to a saturated off gold color with candied aromas of apricot, butterscotch and dried pineapple. Vanilla, spice, honey, beeswax and a touch of tangy saffron or turmeric also appear. The mouthfeel is very dry, almost tannic in intensity. Why we like it
Here's a white wine that has aged in barrique for four years and then about a year in bottle, demonstrating that Vernaccia can show good results when placed in the cellar for some time. It's not intuitive to think of Vernaccia di San Gimignano as an Italian white with ambitions for longevity; however, local tradition in this beautiful Tuscan town does give more latitude to the wine than you may expect, and most producers are very proud to present late-release wines like this sample from Falchini. A 6,667-bottle production, (91 points Robert Parker's WINE ADVOCATE, Monica Larner, Issue Date 30th Nov 2020)
Pairings
This is an interesting, 14% alcohol wine that won't appeal to all, but it will pair up nicely to white meat or a spicy Indian tandoori dish. (91 points Robert Parker's WINE ADVOCATE, Monica Larner, Issue Date 30th Nov 2020)
